If you are going to be using it for ensemble playing, get the metal mute. it will blend better with the trombone section. It will also project the "muted tone" better. If you are using it primarily for solo playing, I would prefer a wood or wood & metal mute, but that is just my preference. I like the warmth of the tone better for that kind of playing. I only own one mute, and it is metal because I use it mostly for ensemble stuff.
