Oh, don't be silly. If your event is something you enjoy, go for it. I'm finding, though, that quite a few people have had the same reservations I've had. Why should we go on having OUR TubaChristmas ruined, without even musing whether there is a better alternative? I think the idea of going to a few malls or nursing homes with 8-12 players sounds like a LOT more fun than the mass thing, but I sure don't want to dissuade anyone that enjoys the mass experience.
