the last few years I've taken a different horn each time, experiences as follows:

1) my Holton BAT : got a LOT of attention, let 3-4 close friends play it some, when I got it back from a couple of them, discovered that some kid had managed to drop a wire stand against the bell hard enough to put sharp ding/scratches in it (the "friends" didn't say a word to me about it...pfft)

2) my favorite old satin silver Bohm & Meinl, great eye-candy attention, and real easy to just blend sound-wise with no desire to cut or stand out on my own

3) if I go to Tuba-Fest this year I'll take a very crusty-looking old slant-rotor german horn, mainly because I won't have to worry about it and it's light.

My advice? If you have a beater horn, use it, unless you have 100% control over your own space and the horn at all times you might not wanna risk having your favorite baby messed up

Rgds,

Dale
