The extra weight of the longer comp pistons together with the rigidity of the whole structure, that the many solderings provide, by itself is a darkening and compressing factor. So your experience of the brighter sound of the Willson Marzan non-comper should be no surprise.

The has been lots of discussions on the low range of German style F tubas. Lots of persons have called comp instruments stuffy in their low range.

My position is, that each and every design type puts its own specific demands on its players. Some of us like the one type, others like another type.

The diversity of options is a richness for us low brassers. And a hell for the marketing and distribution of our instruments (slow turn-over, high price, large volume, very vulnerable, low mark-up goods are nightmares from any viewpoint in any business).
