TWENTY-FIFTH ANNUAL DALLAS MERRY TUBACHRISTMAS CONCERT

Over 175 area tuba and euphonium players will present the twenty-fifth annual Dallas Merry TUBACHRISTMAS concert on Tuesday, December 24. The performance will take place at Thanks-Giving Square, corner of Bryan, Ervay, and Pacific Streets, downtown Dallas at 12:00 noon. This year’s conductor will be Dr. Stephen Shoop, local band director and long time coordinator of Merry TUBACHRISTMAS concerts in Dallas and Fort Worth. Special Guest Conductor will be Harvey Phillips, world renowned tuba artist and teacher and founder of TUBACHRISTMAS concerts. This twenty-fifth anniversary in Dallas will mark Mr. Phillips’ tenth appearance as our Dallas TUBACHRISTMAS conductor. Master of ceremonies will be local media personality Alex Burton.

The concert, free of charge and open to the public, is presented by the D-FW area chapter of the International Tuba and Euphonium Association (I.T.E.A.) and the Harvey Phillips Foundation. Local sponsorship and assistance is provided by the Thanks-Square Foundation, and Brook Mays Music Company.

TUBACHRISTMAS concerts are performed annually in over 150 cities throughout the United States and Canada. These concerts are presented as a tribute to the late, great William J. Bell who was born on Christmas Day in 1902. (This is the one-hundredth anniversary of Mr. Bell’s birth). “Bill” Bell is recognized by all musicians as the dean of tuba players throughout the world. When Dallas began presenting its annual TUBACHRISTMAS concerts in 1978, it joined only four other cities in the United States—New York, Chicago, Washington DC, and Los Angeles in this national tradition.

Persons of all ages who play the tuba, sousaphone, euphonium or baritone horn are cordially invited to perform in this concert. Registration is from 9:00-9:45 a.m. and is followed by a music rehearsal from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. All activities—registration, rehearsal, and concert will take place at Thanks-Giving Square. Participants should dress in accordance with the prevailing weather conditions and should bring a music lyre and instrument strap. The music performed will be from CAROLS FOR A MERRY TUBACHRISTMAS used at all official MERRY TUBACHRISTMAS concerts. The books may be purchased at registration for $10.00.

The registration fee for participants is $5.00.

Harvey Phillips Clinic: Mr. Phillips will be presenting a low brass clinic following the Fort Worth TUBACHRISTMAS concert on Monday, December 23. It will be held at the Radisson Plaza Hotel, downtown Fort Worth, 815 Main Street (2 blocks north of the Tarrant County Convention Center). The clinic will take place from 1:15-2:30. Admission to the clinic is $5.00 and payable in Fort Worth at the TUBACHRISTMAS event, or at the door prior to the clinic.
