Dan, please excuse my earlier flippant remark, I didn't mean to take anything away from the serious tone of your original post. I agree that it is a shame the tuba (and other instruments) are used less and less, for whatever reasons. And my hat is off to folks like you who spend their time and energy starting and maintaining local ensembles, filled with real musicians who play real music and bring untold joy to the lives of countless people, if only for an hour and a half at a time. That's why I play (and teach) music, and hope to continue doing so as long as I can afford to live on what the public schools and local bar scene can spare me.
