I've played them both. As advertised the 842 did respond better. But the tone color became slighly brighter than the 642. The 842 sounds closer to a Willson 2900 whereas the 642 is darker due to the thicker metal.
Don't think I could justify the additional bucks. Regarding the improved tuning of the flat middle C, you can simply have the first valve slide cut on the 642 by a good repairman. According to one of the Yamaha reps, the company introduces the newest innovations in their top of the line models and then gradually introduce them into the other lines. Perhaps we will see the 842's features without the gold trim in the 642 in the future. Comments?
