I've used both side- and top- loaders. The only problem I have with some side loaders is that many have absolutely no protection for the bell, nor is there any way to add some.
I've taken both Pro-tech side loaders and Tuxedo top loaders and sewn a circle of 1/4" plywood into the bell ends. If I had a 2-piece Altieri top-loader, I might be tempted to ask Donna to do the same thing to the lid.
The nice thing about a 6/4 top-loader is that you can use it as a sleeping bag...
