All of the suggestions below are good. Another approach worth exploring is to develop your listening ability by playing along with recorded music WITHOUT any sheet music in front of you. Start with simple stuff like CW or dixieland or blues, then get some calypso, bossa nova, and some old Jackson 5. Crank up the stereo and have a ball just staying with the band. It won't make you a better reader, but it will put you in touch with that "internal bass drum" that is so important.
