The G you are referring to on trombone is extremely flat and isn't played in 2nd position, it's played in sharp 2nd. There really is a huge difference there.
On a BBb tuba, I'm sure you'd never play that Ab at the top of the staff open, because it's unusably flat. Playing it 1+2 is the best bet, especially if you make adjustments with the first valve slide.
