I am very surprised by your comments on the Conn 20K. In my experience they are as well made as any sousaphone out there. I have one made in 1967 and have used it for a couple of summers just about every day, between performances and practicing. I have never had to do more than oil the valves and grease the slides. Conn did have quality issues when their brass instruments were made in Texas in the 70s, so if you were playing a Texas horn I could understand these problems. Otherwise, I don't think that you will find a sturdier sousaphone, or one that plays better, in production today.
