The questions posed by GC are the right ones. If you have trouble holding the horn, you need to determine exactly what problem or problems you are having. However, I would suggest a possible quick fix, if you are resting the horn on your lap and not on the chair. If you haven't already got one, get a non-slip pad to put on your left leg to help keep the horn from slipping. Materials I have heard of being used include mouse pads, rubberized shelf paper, and pin pong paddle covers. With that, the weight of the horn is supported by your leg and the pad keeps it from slipping around, which means you don't have to really hang on to the horn, just keep it upright with the mouthpiece in position for your chops.
