This is an exact parallel to the way that all two-valve bass trombones used to be constructed.

As J.B. mentioned, Yamaha used to offer a 4th valve slide 5th rotor insert for their EEb tuba and for the 321 euphonium. Rich Matteson claimed that he came up with the idea, or at least that he was the one who convinced them to go into production. It seemed to work fine on the 321 eupho, and I'd be interested in purchasing one of these rigs if anyone has one for sale (as they are no longer made. I don't like compensating euphonia/ums [whatever].)

I'd be perfectly willing to try a for-sale tuba set up like this, and without any prejudice.
