Maybe certain personalities gravitate toward certain instruments. The stereotypes do seem to apply in many cases to some degree. Strings - uptight, holier-than-thou, artEEEsts; woodwinds - fewer brain cells; horns - eccentric/weird; trumpets- type A personality/aggressive prima donna-ish; trombones - goofy/dopey and crazy; tubas - big, dumb, lethargic, drunkards too happy for their own good. Not always true, but we all know players who have these traits. Never met a violinist I could smoke a cigar and drink a beer with. (yes, I've known many) I would hypothesize (based on experience) that the personalities of players are more similar with those of their same instrument than with those of different instruments. May be pure conjecture and BS, but that's my take on it.
