This is a good description of how to start. In my experience, the ease of playing these notes is highly dependent on the horn being used. By practicing these notes on the horns that seem to be the hardest to play, they come quite easily on the other horns. I still have a couple of 3 valve BBbs on which I just can't get the pedal Bb consistently, if at all. It just pops out on a couple of others. I even have a 3 valve Eb on which it is easier to play. Like anything else in playing, practice makes a huge difference.
