At the recent IHS convention in Kalamazoo, the large horn ensemble I was in, had two young male players who came to the rehearsals but not the concerts. Their entire purpose seemed to be to disrupt the group by playing the lowest part extremely loudly and unmusically. Since it was all volunteer, the conductor didn't get very agressive with them and just let them do what they wanted. The rest of us, who had hoped to actually learn something from the conductor, who was an ageing but very respected player, probably should have applied peer pressure and thrown the louts out.
Then, for the concert, a 3rd player, who had not been to any rehearsal, snuck on stage and played the lowest part, sight-reading it badly.
I just don't get it, frankly. I guess there are bullies everywhere, and the more polite their victims are, the more they enjoy their bullying.
