First of all: Congratulations to a fine instrument!
From your description of the colour I might suspect, that your 20K has the same finish as my 40K: goldplating over a foundation of silverplating. With a bit of wear through the years the finish ends up something in between the two metals.
Personally I would stay away from polishing this sousa. I happen to like the personality such instruments radiate, when one can see, that they have had a real life in music.
