He'll survive because he's smart. He doesn't force in order to be heard, he plays for quality and consistancy, and comes through just fine. The "monster" brass of the NYP can play loud, and sometimes they play too loud for the rest of the orchestra, but they are not mindless blasters. They have developed an amazing purity and eveness of sound at all extremes of dynamic that was once the pride of Chicago, and still is, but now the CSO brass has a serious rival in this respect. For sheer foundational BIGNESS below the staff, it's hard to equal Warren, or Gene Pokorny on anything but a 6/4. It will be interesting to speculate whether Kyle would make such an investment in equipment, and reinvention in approach as he continues his work with the NYP.
