We tried a couple of arrangements right out of the SPEBSQSA books and found that they didn't work as well as hoped for. Harmonies just didn't sound right. Also tried taking (I think) the tenor part down an octave - didn't sound right either.
I concluded that the arrangement needs to be done by someone with some SKILL at arranging, not just by simply moving parts an octave here and there - harmonies just wouldn't "ring out" like real barbershop.
