Joe's right, the sound's the thing. However, if you also really appreciate the way a horn looks and/or the way it's put together, you'll find yourself wanting to pick it up and play with it more--and for longer during your life.

Since you live so near the Brasswind, make an appt. with Mike Russo, who (I'm betting) would be happy to blow several of them for you. If you have a sound in your head that is for you the perfect tuba sound, chances are you'll hear it coming out of one of those horns. If you don't already, then you just may find it that day.

As to the craftsmanship side, I personally find the German horns to be put together better. The Werils have struck me as a bit flimsy.

On another note, like you, I started pretty late and play mostly solo. I started on an Eb and have switched to an F, which better matches the sound in my head.
