Both Finale (2002) and Sibelius (2.0) have released new versions in recent months. Upgrade prices are substantial ($100 or so). The biggest reason to upgrade is that neither version can produce files compatible with earlier versions of the product. Hence, bargain-basement prices on the older versions.
This, after all, is what keeps you buying the upgrades, even if you don't need the free "Band in a Box" feature.
It's also what probably killed the idea of a standard interchange format between products (NIFF was supposed to be it, but Coda pulled out of the group and Sibelius was never in it).
