I agree with Sean's comments on the whole, but would clarify that there are many reasons why a piece of new original music may not be played, other than that the piece sucks. I have been witness to the phenomena of band directors and soloists choosing a 'well known' composer's new work over an unknown composer's.

And conversly, if we could 'dig up' a previously unseen piece that a famous composer wrote, wouldn't it receive more attention than a much better piece by an unknown?

Being an unknown composer means that you have to publicise/push/market/pedal/SELL your music much harder than someone who has a network/structure/fan-club/ready market already in place.
