I remember Ravelli giving a lecture at the TMEA conference about ten years ago, and saying that any concert band without a bass tuba to go along with the contrabass tubas was missing something.

I, too, have used a Yamaha 621 F tuba on occasion in a concert band, when the parts needed a high-sounding tuba to add color. We learned the value of that when we performed as a tuba quartet, where four different instruments (CC, F, big compensating euph, and German rotary euph) produced surprising clarity without upsetting the quality of the blend. One director in a small fraternal-club band preferred the bright sound of the F, even if I was the only player. But in a big concert band, I would only consider it when there was a solid section to float above.

Which brings us back to the point: Had I only one instrument for such situations, I would want it to be a contrabass.
