The Sousa marches that you mention have been arranged, rearranged, and butchered, with parts left out or simplified and keys changed from the original. Even Sousa's own band didn't play the marches exactly as written, we're told, but added unique florishes.
About the only thing that I can suggest would be to get sheet music and recordings from the same source, such as the Brion/Schissel arrangements and the New Sousa Band (directed by Keith Brion) recordings. Maybe other folks would have better suggestions.
I've played S&SF and WP so many times that I have them well memorized. Trouble is, one of the two bands that I play uses a different arrangement in a different key. Drives me crazy.
