Ringmaster,
I use plastic bell rings on nearly every instrument I play. Here's how to make one, quick, neat and easy. I start with vinyl tubing from the hardware store, 5/16" I.D., or 7/16" O.D. A 6-foot length gives you room to experiment and make a mistake or two. Next, I cut the tubing lenghwise, using a fresh single-edge razor blade, keeping the cut as straight as possible. Once this is done, I fit the material onto the bell and determine the correct length. Since the material has some give, I cut it about 1/2" to 1" short, so there is enough tension to keep it from slipping off all the time. I position the joint to the rear of the bell, and use 2 to 4 drops of Super Glue, or equivalent. Hold the joint in place for about 30 seconds, and the job is done. I do not put Vaseline, or anything else on the ring. You now have real protection that, I find, also cuts unwanted upper frequencies out of my sound.
