If a basstrombone has intonation problems, then they almost exclusively must be ascribed to the player.

A public advocate (on TV) for the bass trombone in at least some quintet occasions was John Fletcher (who according to my informations was not a tuba/bass bone doubler).

Denis Wick advocates a 2 trumpet/3 trombones set-up for the baroque quintet repertory.

In more modern generic quintets one most undoubtedly must follow the directions of the composer, be it tuba or bass bone.
