On a trumpet, the "gap" is the distance between the end of the mouthpiece and the start of the tubing in the receiver (where the mouthpiece would "bottom out" if it were too long). The gap size in usually around a millimeter or two and adjusting it affects the tone. I thought most tubas and euphs didn't have a gap. (always learning)
