I concur with you that a String Soloist will keep the sound pretty much the same. It is a matter of survival. But, the string instrument is capable of a huge palette of colors, some of which I try to incorporate into my own playing. If you get a chance to listen to The Guaneri Quartet playing Beethoven or Brahms, you will see. I won't bore you with specifics nor am I trying to educate, but since I started conducting strings, my playing has really changed. It helps that my wife is a Top-Notch violinist(not just husbandly compliments, she really is that good. She can make about a gazillion different colors with just a change of bow stroke. For what it's worth.
