A similar analogy: Bob Lark (jazz at DePaul, pretty good trumpet player) came to work with our jazz band on To You. This is a ballad with everything from pp to ff, and a lot of work for the lead trumpet. To her, he said "when you blow through your horn, aim for a spot in front of you. For pp, it might be two feet in front of you, for mp, the director's head, and for ff the back wall of the hall." And when he demonstrated, you could almost see his wind piercing the back wall as he shook the window in their panes.
