A good HS range is the E 5 spaces below the staff to a high Bb above the staff. Anything more is great but the range described is a good starting point.
Some music all HS Tubists should know are
Air and Bouree Bach/Bell
Variations on Theme of Judas Maccabeus (sp?) Beethoveen/Bell
Honor and Arms Handel/Bell
The next level of solos are (Only a truely good HS tubist can play well)
Serenade no 12 Persichetti
Suite for Tuba Haddad
Suite Hartly
These are merly recommendations. Almost all of my students go through these solos to learn the fundamentals (style, pitch, intonation, articulation, rhythm) as well as etude books (Fink, Blazavich, Kopprach, Rochut) before hitting the much more difficult material. I have had students learn harder pieces, but it is usually by rote/luck that they get through it.
