I know a lot of players who have worn through the gold plating on mouthpieces very quickly (under two years). Most were pro/semi pro players with a very hectic gig schedule, and almost all the mouthpieces were Denis Wick (including the good ones - this is Britain and everyone plays Denis Wick). I spoke to a bloke who works at a large instrument repair/retail company and he said that for cost reasons the plating on gold mouthpieces tends to be thinner.

Personally, I can't feel any difference between them, and the colour of my mouthpiece never affected my sound which is a lot more important to me, and with the amount of wear and tear my mouthpieces take I wont be going gold any time soon.

James.
