in my opinion, Gold is smoother, slipperier than silver. I switched to gold when I was playing outdoors alot, less loss of skin at the end of the day. I also am used to a "wet" emboucher and even in dry weather, the gold still feels mobile on my chops. Now I play indoors more and I am back to silver. Sometimes a gold mouthpiece of identical size will feel larger than the silver. I attribute this the the gripping feeling of the silver.

Note: I think the Denis Wick SM pieces are great for euphonium, on my sovereign I've used the SM4 AND SM5. Also, more readily available in gold.
