Sousa became director of the U.S. Marine Band in 1880 and served until 1892 until he formed his own band. I've seen numerous photos of the Marine Band under Sousa's term but have never noticed anything that appeared to be a BB-flat instrument. As Tom Railsback indicated, it is most likely that bands did not start using the BB-flat instruments until after 1890, and it is therefore unlikely that Sousa used them while he was conductor of the Marine Band. As far as published marches are concerned, almost all marches published prior to 1900 have been re-scored or transcribed for modern concert band instrumentation and. In fact, most of the time Sousa did not use published versions of his own work and relied on hand-written scores that were quickly produced overnight for a concert the next day. On occasion he was known to even depart from these scores during the course of a program and would call on the musicians to respond extemporaneously to any changes or modifications he might envision while in the middle of the actual performance.
