Good point, and good answer. Ansel Adams, the great photographer, did commercial photography for most of his life. He called those "assignments from without" as opposed to the "assignments from within." But each included as much of his artistic vision as possible. So, when I was in a beer tent, I was playing an assignment from without, but still putting whatever artistry I could muster up into the product. When we play for an audience, we always are mixing what we want with what they are willing to pay for (directly or indirectly). Sometimes the mix is pleasing to us and sometimes not.

When I'm in the practice room, however, I play for me, and me alone. That's when my wife laughs. But, hey, I like that modern stuff.
