I bought a beat up Yamaha 321 that looked like garbage, but actually played OK, for a little over $200. I am still waiting for the final number on the repairs, but a basic fixup was estimated to cost around $350. Total cost, close to $600 and I think that is a bargain. You can occasionally find old bell front, 3 valve Baritone horns, like the Conns you see in almost every school, for around $200. For that price they would have cosmetic defects, but they would play. You can also sometimes run across someone who has no idea what the instrument is and is selling it at a garage sale for some nominal price because they found it in an attic. I know someone who bought a 3 valve compensating Besson for $25 that way, but again I wouldn't count on it.
