I'm not sure about that, Rick. Interpretation changes with time. I suspect that the players in Bach's time didn't play things at the strict tempi we tend to play them now and almost certainly employed different styling. Ever listen to a recording of Albert Schweitzer playing a Bach fugue? Lots and lots of rubato. Granted he was a Romantic, but perhaps that puts him closer to Bach than we are.
