I won a solo competition once that was for orchestral brass players. Anyway, the trumpet player I rode with to the competition had the guts to say that tubas win things like that because of the novelty of it all. Kinda like if we have any ounce of brains and can play all the notes, then we're gonna win...forget making music! Just like a trained seal act where the seal honks out "Twinkle Twinkle" on the horns set up for him!

I heard the trumpet player do his thing...it was musical malpractice.

By the way...not to brag or anything...but I just had my second tuba student in 3 years win the concerto competition at The Boston Conservatory (no tuba players on the panel). It's good to know that there are people out there that listen for the music, not the novelty!
