I have heard of a concerto competition at a music school where there were 5 judges or so on the panel. There were 20 people auditioning and the winners would perform with the orchestra. Well, there was a fantastic tuba player who played the John Williams Tuba Concerto and nailed it. (I was relayed this story from a pianist who was on the committee. He thought the tuba playing was impressive and felt that the tuba player should be one of the winners.) Well, the other members didn't like the piece and because some of them were string players they felt that the piano concerto (Rachmaninoff) and other concertos that are standard rep should be played because they are better pieces for their students to play. So in essence, the tuba player got screwed because of the piece of music he chose and not because of his playing, which is what he should have been judged on.
