I took my tuba from San Francisco to New York last year to play at Carnegie and it sat in its Hard wooden case the entire time. It didn't fit in the case inside the gig bag, so I rolled up the bag and stuck it in the bell, which also assists with pressure changes. The only thing that got banged up was a small part of the vinyl lining on the outside of the case. Also, for some reason, when I took out my tuba to play it in NY, the valves seemed to be entirely void of oil, and they were well lubed before I left. Strange, no?
