"The Ride" is one of the big time excerpts you will be asked to play! As said in the first post, listen Gene Pokorny's comentary. To answer your question exactly, no your school did not make a mistake by requesting this. Look for the Abe Torchinsky book "Wagner Orchestral Excerpts" it also gives comentary in the front of the book.
