This is why when the weather is freezing, the military bands here in DC "freeze-out" funerals. If your whole trumpet section has freezing valves while playing "Eternal Father"--well, you get my meaning.
This brings up a story as well. Apparently, a few Inagural parades ago, someone in our band decided to write a freeze-out "Anchors Aweigh" arrangement. This way, if our valves froze, the band could still play. Well, on open notes on the brass instruments. Think about it, a tuba would play the first note, a trumpet would play the next followed by a French horn. Hehehehe. Of course, I wasn't in the band yet to say whether or not this is true, but it still makes me giggle.
