I play tuba and bass trombone. An inexpensive bass bone that I like is the Getzen dave taylor model. dual bore slide, rose bell. dependent rotors. The only thing that I hear negative about the thayer valve is that they may seem slower than the piston and some players miss the resistance. As a tuba player you might like the free blowing of the thayer system. Bells larger than 9 3/4 start to loose some center to me. 9.5 is a good standard diameter and you wont have any trouble finding cases and mutes that fit.
