Steve's advice was right on. Also, talk to your teacher about different mouthpieces as he or she has direct experience with your playing.
As for gold plating, it really doesn't make much of a difference in playing. Gold is a little smoother, but that is nearly imperceptable. The main reasons to gold plate a mouthpiece are because you like the way it looks and/or if you have an allergy/reaction to silver. Gold is slightly less reactive so may help if silver bothers your skin.
