Shilke did experiments with trumpets, in which he started with three horns that played alike in raw brass. He plated one, laquered one, and kept the third as a control. He found that the laquer made a difference but the plating did not. I am not convinced that these conclusions can be extended to tubas, nor am I convinced that listeners would be able to hear the differences perceived by those trumpet players. Remember, the goals of a trumpet player in regard to sound are quite different from the goals of a tubist.
