Although I have not done it myself, I have heard that it may help the response a bit, but you may sacrifice a little intonation. I think there has been a thread recently on this topic, but it's like the laquer vs. silver vs bare brass issue, if it works for you, if you can hear a difference, then go for it! Raising the lead pipe probably isn't too difficult for a competent repairman, and soldering it back down if necessary should be a piece of cake.
It's not much, but it's an answer! Now maybe someone who really knows will wade in.
