It depends on the musical function of what you're playing. This can change a lot even within one piece. Most of what you play isn't solo (which is when it's more up to you). If there's a section, be it brass, basses, bassoons, cellos, etc., with whom you share a line (or share creating a distinctive timbre) and with whom you could potentially sound OUT of tune, that's where to focus your efforts. Certainly if you're playing with the trombones, you go with them, even more so (is that one word?) with the bass trombone if you're playing unison or octaves, but that's not the way it is all the time and it's necessary to find a way to hear what's going on at a distance. Your sensitivity to balance is also an issue to consider. The same considerations apply as for pitch. Hope this helps.
