After careful concultation with my resident chemist wife, I am convinved that your purple discoloration is form of Halide combined with the silver (I don't get lunch if I am not convinced so I am convinced). Her top two nominations for the chemical were iodine or chlorine. She also said that it could be bromine but, if it were, you would be dead. Black is usually silver sulfate or silver nitrate. She and I have cleaned purple discoloration from silver with Hagerty's Silversmith polish when other silver polishes (Tarnex, Wright's) won't touch the purple stain. Hope this is of some help. By the way, on silver plate, when we have run out of other polishes, we have used salt rubbed with a lemon half. It works quite well but I can't say how abrasive it is or how harsh.
