At last, a topic I can comment on with authority! Not all akavit
gets put on ships and sailed around the world. Those that are end
up as "Linne" akavit- linne being the Danish word for equator. The
labels on these bottles have a map showing the route taken by the
ship. Four crossings of the equator are required. This tradition
began after World War 1. Apparently, a ship with several cases in
the hold, spent the duration travelling around the world, unable to
unload its cargo. After the war, the cargo was consumed and judged
to be of exceptional quality. It was felt that the rolling of the
ship had a settling and smoothing effect on the product.
