I think you may be mistaken about the Yamaha procedure. [And I'm not trying to start a pro-Yamaha/anti-Yamaha debate here.] As I understand it, they apply a polymeric lacquer to the horn; how they do this I don't know. It doesn't wear off like brushed or sprayed-on lacquers. In fact, it'd be a major job to get it off, even with steel wool.
