As griff has explained. Using the same approach, take in the air to the max. That may require several attempts of quick inhale and quick exhale, concentrating on the expansion into the sides, back and down. Then inhale to the max. followed by controlled exhale, the start of which must be quiet and very controlled. I used the same technique with my jr high band for years and rather than add one count I had them add 5 counts to long notes or chords. In time, most students easily held notes to 40+ counts, flutes 25+. We all learned that there were no restrictions to phrasing. Controlled exhaling is critical! When fingers and notes are added, the potential is reduced by about a 1/3. Depending on tempo, 4, 6 and even 8 measure phases become easy regardless of the speed of notes. Fingering silently as you exhale, helps to "visualze" your goal.
